...No.

Okay, so I know that people are all about saving the planet and the environment and stuff like that, and I'm all for better mileage for the Batmobile, but...

Thing is?

I have spent way too much time dealing with Ivy to ever really get into the whole environmentalist thing.  I mean, yay for the people that can get into that, and I do what I can, but I don't think I'm ever going to be one of the people with the signs shouting about parks closing.  Because those are usually the kinds of places Ivy shows up, and...

Yeah.  That's when I'm usually a little to busy to hold a sign.

Blackout

...Oh, those suck.  There was this one time the Joker decided it would be a great idea to cause a blackout in Gotham, because of all the chaos it would cause, right?  And--yeah.  It was pretty bad for a while.  I mean, Gotham is no picnic in the daytime, and it's always worse at night, so with the blackout... people got pretty bad.

But then--man, I really do work for the awesomest guy in the world--Batman came in, and he and Batgirl and Nightwing and me helped the cops get things under control again.  It was like one of those stories in magazines that never happen in real life, and definitely not in Gotham, but people just... pulled together.  They helped us and the cops get their neighborhoods under control and the headline the next day was about how the cops and the communities kept it together in the face of a city-wide blackout.

The Joker didn't even get a mention (and man, was he mad about that).

Still.  Even though it worked out okay... I'd definitely rather not have it happen again.  Gotham's really not all that great a place when all the lights are out.

"I've found out why people laugh. They laugh because it hurts... because it's the only thing that'll make it stop hurting."

Tim doesn't laugh anymore.  He wants to, sometimes.  Dick still tells jokes, and when he's on the street, Tim occasionally feels the old, familiar urge to just whoop with glee.

But he doesn't.  He smiles at Dick's jokes, and grins when he's flying (not too wide--never too wide), but he doesn't laugh.  He doesn't like the sound when he laughs.  It's high and wrong, and he doesn't remember what he's supposed to sound like, but this isn't it.  Laughing shouldn't make him remember bad things (evil-bad-wrong.  Pain and drugs and shocks and pain on top of pain and he wishes he could forget but he never ever can, not even when he sleeps, and he hates that he wakes Dick up when he has nightmares, but he can't keep from screaming when he's asleep).

No one else hears that it's wrong.  They say he sounds fine, and he's supposed to laugh, because that's what people do when they're happy, but laughing doesn't make him happy anymore.  It makes his face hurt, like he's been smiling too long, and he's always just a little afraid that he won't be able to stop, the way it had been for those few, horrible weeks.  He never wants that again.

So he smiles instead.  If it means he's more serious these days than he'd ever been as Robin (never, never again), well.  It's not a game, is it?

There's nothing particularly funny about this life.

At the beginning, when it first started, all he ever wanted was just one more day. One more day of living the best dream he'd ever had, because he knew--he knew--that he was going to wake up.

He was going to wake up at home, in the tiny, dirty apartment, where he lived alone almost as often as he lived with his dad. He was going to have to decide whether he was better off going to school and getting the free lunch, or skipping and trying to find enough food and other basics to last him a few days. Maybe. If he was both lucky and frugal with them. He was going to have to wonder if he'd be arrested (again) just trying to get enough to make it by.

So when he went to bed at night, no matter how exhausted he was, he prayed. Not for health, or safety, or any of the other blessings that people usually prayed for. All he ever asked for was just one more day.
