IN CHARACTER
Name: Tim Drake/Robin
Canon: Batman:The Animated Series
Age: 16
Timeline: Just after the main canon of the animated series, before the flashback events of Return of the Joker
Background: Tim Drake on DCAU Wiki
Personality: To most of the world, Tim is Bruce Wayne’s newest young ward. He has a bit of a past as a thief, and was in juvie at least once, but is obviously trying to make a clean start with Bruce. He seems to be an almost stereotypical teenage boy, who loves video games and junk food, and hates homework. But that’s only part of the story.
The other part of the story is Robin. When Tim first met Batman, it didn’t take him long to figure out that he was really Bruce Wayne (...mainly accomplished by snooping while trying to rob him), and it took him even less time to want to join in and help. While Bruce initially resisted Tim’s attempts to involve himself in his Mission, he soon realized Tim was serious, and that it was better to train him than to let him run off half cocked. And so the second Robin was born.
As Robin, Tim is a bit more serious. While he still knows how to joke and have fun, he does understand that this is serious business, and he needs to take it seriously. People’s lives--including his new family’s--could depend on him, and he doesn’t take that lightly. He doesn’t want to let any of them, or the people of Gotham, down.
His determination to do right by the people he cares about and wants to protect has gotten him in trouble, though. He has been known to go a little overboard. When Clayface “killed” a friend Tim had made by reabsorbing her (she was actually already a part of him, though she didn’t know it), he nearly killed him in vengeance. Batman stopped him, but Tim felt like he should have gone further, and that justice had not been served by Clayface’s arrest.
He has a tendency toward overconfidence and bravado. Part of that is real--he really does have a lot of faith in himself and the training he’s received from Bruce and the rest of them (and in his own experience), but part of it is an act he falls back on whenever he feels insecure or afraid. In fact, the more uncomfortable or threatened he feels in a situation, the more likely he is to act out. When Two-Face threatens to kill him, he replies that he’s not afraid of him and refuses to give him information. When he’s left to cover Gotham on his own, he insists he can handle it, even when it’s clear he can’t.
Finally, Tim really loves to be underestimated. He knows that as a kid, and one that didn’t get the best of starts in life, a lot of people don’t think he’s as smart or capable as he is. He may be smart enough to keep up with Batman and easily recall minute details, but he pretends to be a careless kid who doesn’t pay attention to anything (a fact that’s underlined by his failing grades in some of his classes and his attitude toward details). When push comes to shove, however, he’s right there with the information he needs. As Robin, being underestimated is one of his favorite things. He likes getting treated like a dumb or helpless kid, so he can show people just how wrong they are.
Powers: Unlike many DC heroes, Tim does not have any “special” abilities. He has the strength and endurance of a teenage athlete, and is very intelligent. He has been trained by Batman in a number of varied fighting disciplines, and he is beginning to learn forensics, criminology, stealth, disguise, and criminology from him as well. He has growing deductive skills, which make him a good detective, and is learning more about computer sciences through his work as Robin. He has also received a lot of training in acrobatics from Nightwing, which makes him a little showy about his acrobatics (he likes to do things like walk on his hands or balance upside down on the backs of chairs), but it also means he’s becoming quite skilled.

[Video flicks on to show a fairly ordinary-looking teenaged boy looking curiously into the camera. He grins, obviously pleased that he has the thing working.]
So that’s how you use the camera on this thing. I usually use WayneTech stuff, so this brand… whatever it is, I couldn’t find a logo… Well, it works differently. [shrug] I’ve been going through… it looks like someone’s decided to treat us all to an impromptu vacation, huh? I gotta say, my guardian’s probably going to be pretty pissed when I don’t turn up to breakfast, but whatever. [grin] I guess he could stand to worry for a bit until I get back.
...Though I kinda hope that’s sooner rather than later. Not that this place is all that bad or anything, as far as I can tell. Maybe a little dim and creepy, but I’m from Gotham, and it’s kind of par for the course there, you know? But there’s no computer or gamestation in this room, and it looks like our mysterious benefactor forgot to pack my gametoy. And my music.
Anyone have any cool video games to play? I’m seriously going to go into withdrawal soon.
Oh, right. I’m Tim, by the way. Tim Drake. It’s nice to meet all of you? At least, it will be, when we actually meet. Especially if one of you came with Mega Mutants 4.
..Please tell me someone has Mega Mutants 4.
And a gamestation to play it on. I will be your new best friend.

( optional ) Third Person Sample:
Tim balances his pencil on his nose, tipping back in his chair and staring up at the ceiling. He hates this class. It's boring, and he's bored, and Mr. Temple always tries to catch him when he's not paying attention, which is just about all the time, and--
"Mr. Drake?"
Like that. He lets the pencil drop to his desk and stops leaning back in his chair, so that all four legs hit the floor again. Mr. Temple gives him a thin, annoyed smile. "So glad you could join us. Now that I have your attention, why don't you tell us a little about the fourth amendment?"
Tim bites back the urge to smirk. Mr. Temple thinks he has him stumped, but this is one of the ones he knows the best, because it's kind of relevant to his life. He shrugs, making his response sound casual. "That's the one about being secure in your effects and person, right? No unreasonable searches and seizures?"
Mr. Temple blinks, clearly surprised that Tim had been able to answer the question. "...That's correct," he says finally, and Tim swallows back another grin, keeping his expression as bland and unaffected as it usually is in this class.
"But that's just, like, for the government, right?" he asks, deciding to really throw his teacher's world off its axis. He never participates in class. Especially this class. "It doesn't count for--say--Batman?"
Mr. Temple's eyes look like they're going to bug out of his head. "Well," he says slowly, watching Tim like he thinks this is some kind of a joke. "For the purposes of the fourth amendment, Batman is a private citizen, in that he's not directly affiliated with a law enforcement agency. However, were he to become arrested, he could be charged with breaking and entering--among many, many other things."
Tim scoffs under his breath. Like Bruce would ever let that happen. "But he's Batman, so... that’s probably never going to happen, right?"
"Don't say never. It's entirely possible that the police will apprehend--"
"Please," Tim interrupts, unable to hold back his irritation. "The cops love Batman." Okay, that’s not entirely true. Most of them like Batman well enough, or at least they don’t hate him. It’s true that Bullock is never too happy to see them, but none of the others seem to mind too much when they lend a hand.
"And why they continue to allow a dangerous vigilante to wander the streets at night--especially one to contributes to the delinquency of a minor--"
Tim (barely) manages to keep from rolling his eyes, then starts tuning Mr. Temple's voice out when he gets into the familiar Batman and Robin rant. There's a reason he never pays attention in Civics.
